Guides/Workflow

Extracting palettes from images

Turn photos into OKLCH palettes — auto clustering, manual picks, privacy (no upload), and sending colors into Studio for product systems.

Auto cluster first

Drop a photo into Image Extract. Colorise Pro runs a k-means pass in a worker, then converts dominant colors to OKLCH so lightness and chroma stay editable — not just a bag of HEX values.

Pick what matters

  • Use click-pick (or the system eyedropper) for brand-critical hues.
  • Drop noisy near-duplicates; keep 4–8 intentional roles.
  • Prefer midtones for accents; reserve near-black/white for surfaces.
  • For websites and logos, try Brand from URL instead of a flat screenshot.

Refine in Studio

Send the set into Studio to lock roles, check contrast, and grow a full token scale. The extract step finds candidates; Studio makes a product system — including light/dark CSS and chart palette export.

Validate readability

Before you ship, run key pairs through the Contrast Checker (WCAG + APCA). A beautiful extract that fails body text is still a failed system.

Export once you’re sure

Copy HEX/OKLCH for quick handoff, or export Tailwind, CSS variables, and DTCG from the same selection. Browse similar systems in Explore if you want a curated starting point instead of a photo.

FAQ

How many colors should I keep from a photo?
Usually 4–8 intentional roles. More becomes noise; fewer can miss accents.
Is extract enough to ship a design system?
No — extract finds candidates. Refine roles, contrast, and scales in Studio before export.
Logo URL or upload?
Both work. Brand from URL pulls site colors; Image Extract is best for photos, screenshots, and mood boards.
