Guides/Color science

OKLCH vs HSL

How OKLCH improves lightness, chroma, and gamut mapping versus HSL — and why modern design systems are going OKLCH-native. With Colorise Pro picker examples.

What HSL gets wrong

HSL is convenient in CSS, but its lightness channel is not perceptual. Yellow at 50% L looks brighter than blue at 50% L. That breaks scales, dark-mode ramps, and “same step” palette logic — especially when you generate 50–950 tokens from a single hue.

What OKLCH fixes

  • L tracks perceived lightness more evenly across hues.
  • C (chroma) separates intensity from hue — punch without muddying the ramp.
  • H stays angular, but pairs cleanly with L and C for harmonies, complements, and gamut mapping.

A quick mental model

  1. Lock the brand hue (H).
  2. Step lightness (L) for surfaces, text, and accents.
  3. Envelope chroma (C) so midtones carry punch and extremes stay in gamut.

That is the same model behind Colorise Pro Studio and the OKLCH Picker.

Why Colorise Pro is OKLCH-native

Studio, Picker, Extract, Contrast, Diff, and Brand share one OKLCH engine. You pick once, export HEX, CSS variables, Tailwind @theme, or DTCG — without rebuilding the mental model for each tool.

When HSL is still fine

Tiny one-off tweaks, legacy design systems, or quick Figma mocks where nobody will regenerate a full ramp. For product UI systems that need even scales and predictable dark mode, OKLCH (or OKLab) is the better source of truth.

FAQ

Is OKLCH supported in all browsers?
Modern Chromium, Safari, and Firefox support oklch() in CSS. For older clients, export HEX or sRGB fallbacks from Colorise Pro.
Should I replace every HSL token overnight?
No. Start with brand accent and surface ramps — the places where perceptual lightness matters most — then migrate semantic roles.
OKLCH or OKLab?
OKLab is Cartesian; OKLCH is polar (L, C, H). Colorise Pro uses OKLCH for picking and harmonies because hue and chroma are editable independently.
